Explaining the Gospel to my Kids
How do you teach your kids the Gospel? Well, there are two ways. Both ways can be challenging, but both are necessary.
- Explain the Gospel.
- Live the Gospel.
Explain the Gospel:
Often this feels more daunting than it is. The Gospel is incredibly complex while being beautifully simple. However, putting the Gospel into words can sometimes trip up any believer. Putting the Gospel into words for your 6, 8, or 10 year old can seem especially tricky. However, there are a number of ways that you can do this, but here are five points with Scriptures that we use to walk through the Gospel. Simply put: The Gospel is the good news that Jesus came and died as a sacrifice to save us from our sins and offer eternal life to those who believe and follow him.
Live the Gospel:
This one can be particularly challenging, but it can also help shape your child's heart in a major way. Show them with your life what it means to be a Christian. Remember, your child is a sponge. They are watching, listening, and absorbing what you do. They will remember what you teach them or what they hear on Sundays, but the things that are modeled for them each and every day will have a great impact on them. Will they see what living for Christ looks from your life? It is good and right for us to teach them the Gospel, but we must make sure what they experience and see lived out is in line with the Gospel as well. As a parent, this may feel like an immense pressure on you. And yes, the calling of a parent is a lofty one, but the beauty of the gospel is when you mess up, there is grace and new mercy to start again. Don't be scared to allow your kids to see that in your life.
