Answering Big Questions
Parent Equip - Answering Big Questions
Where did God come from? What is Heaven like? Why did God let this happen to us? Other BIG questions from little kids.
Chances are your kids have or will hit you with a super deep theological question when you least expect it. What do you do? You may stumble for the exact right thing to say. You may pass over it by saying, "You'll have to ask God about that when you get to Heaven." You may make something up to just move on. No one likes to not know the answer, and we want our kids to believe we know what we're doing for the most part.
Well, lets start by reassuring you that "I don't know, but let's find out together" is always a great answer! It is okay and healthy for your child to see you not know everything about God. It is good for them to see you work to understand. Proverbs 4:7 tells us - "The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom, and whatever you get, get insight." Wisdom and insight begins by seeking to get it. If you want to understand, seek answers and take your kid along on the journey. What does this look like practically? Well, gotquestions.org is a great starting place. Below you will find a link to Got Questions and several of the big questions we are asked often. The bibleproject.com is an excellent resource to increase your understanding of the Bible. They offer overviews to books of the Bible as well as specific topics.
Isaiah 55:8-9 is a great verse to remember as you have these conversations. βFor my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,β declares the Lord.βAs the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts." Though we can seek out answers and we should, ultimately, there are things that God does that we will never fully understand. His ways and his thoughts are higher than ours. We should seek understanding with great faith that God is good, and we can trust in the things we cannot understand.
